The Sacrament of First Holy Communion

On Sundays the 2nd and 16th of June 2019, the pupils from our First Holy Communion classes received the Blessed Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time.  The classes were led by Adrienne Blondell and fellow Catechists Alma Pothecary, Anne Hammersley, Gill Hawkins, Natalie Finneran and Fiona Wicks.

At both of the First Holy Communion Masses St.Catherine of Alexandria’s Church was packed with parishioners. There were 22 children altogether in 2019, split into 11 at the first and 10 at the second Mass, as we had one of our pupils receiving his Sacrament of First Holy Communion in India in August 2019.

Since September 2018 our experienced Catechists at St Catherine of Alexandria had been teaching the children using the programme 'God and Me’ in which the children were prepared for their special Sacrament of receiving Jesus for the first time, and learning about God and getting to know Him better. This programme includes the following lesson topics:

• The Mystery of the Holy Trinity
• God the Father the Creator
• The Fall and my friendship with God
• Special gift from God the Father
• Gifts from God the Son, ‘Jesus’
• Sin and the Sacrament of Reconciliation
• Sacrament of Reconciliation (First Confession).
• Sacrament of Holy Communion
• Sacrament of Holy Communion and the Mass (Final Preparations)

Our children’s lessons were carefully planned, full of learning, and included fun activities which the children really enjoyed and benefitted from.

It is always a pleasure for our Catechists to teach the children.  We have a range of nationalities we teach, and in 2019 we had children from Kerala, Portugal and Poland to name a few.
